Abstract
Abstract Chapter 3 describes Punjab’s initial land tenure system after annexing it in 1849. The province occupied a special place in British India, reflected in its unique administrative structure and the characteristics of its early administrators. These combined to structure the initial land tenure settlements more favourably to the peasant cultivators at the expense of the traditional zamindar class. The 1857 uprising shifted the momentum towards restoring the property rights and other privileges of the traditional aristocratic classes across British India. Consequently, it was expected that the rights of the zamindars (landlords) would be prioritised in Punjab during the reassessment of its initial land tenure settlements in the 1860s. This led to an intense contestation between two schools of British administrators, one favouring the landlords and the other more sympathetic to the peasant cultivators.
