Abstract
In 2003, as the experimental filmmaker Ernie Gehr was in the process of shifting over to digital video after thirty-plus years on 16mm, he completed The Collector . This essay investigates how that early video entry from Gehr’s almost completely digital twenty-first century set a tone for how he would fuse the broad history of motion pictures into their latest technological development. By paying special attention to Gehr’s own collecting habits, which took off in the 1970s, and which he discussed at the 2017 Montréal event, from which this book was born (Gehr’s remarks are included elsewhere in this volume), we get an intriguing look at an artist’s process: gestation, reaction, inspiration, and special play with the surfaces of media.
