Abstract
Close analysis of a corpus of nearly 1000 newspaper articles in addition to civil, business, legal and family records, shows that Annie Holt successfully navigated her way in the business world. Her life story shows that the matchmaking business was a profitable vocation. Annie believed in companionate marriage, but did not reject the patriarchal order. While the visceral reactions towards Holt’s Matrimonial Agency point to the social and cultural anxieties the commodification of marriage sparked, the agency’s longevity indicates that despite bad press, many Australians found Holt’s services valuable and useful. Customers saw the business as legitimate and perhaps also as a vehicle to circumvent oppressive norms.
