Abstract
RESUMEN: Este artículo estudia la solidaridad Canadá-Cuba a través de los esfuerzos del Fair Play for Cuba Committee (FPCC) canadiense en la década de 1960. Por medio de un estudio de las discordias y los problemas operativos que socavaron las actividades del FPCC en Quebec, provincia francófona de Canadá, el análisis explora con mayor amplitud las dinámicas regionales y locales inherentes al funcionamiento de la solidaridad interamericana. Se demuestra que los fracasos del Fair Play canadiense en Quebec no reflejaban una falta de interés en Cuba por parte de las fuerzas progresistas de Quebec. Más bien, fueron los malentendidos y las diferencias fundamentales en la práctica política de los activistas de la solidaridad cubana las que socavaron los esfuerzos de reclutamiento del Fair Play en Quebec. El análisis pone de manifiesto una disonancia entre, por un lado, una dirección anglófona del FPCC canadiense que veía el movimiento de apoyo a Cuba a través del prisma de la solidaridad Norte-Sur y, por otro, a los quebequenses francófonos que concebían la solidaridad con Cuba a través de una lente Sur-Sur. Estas visiones contradictorias de la solidaridad Canadá-Cuba tuvieron un impacto negativo en la aventura del Fair Play en Quebec. ABSTRACT: This article studies Canada-Cuba solidarity through the efforts of the Canadian Fair Play for Cuba Committee (FPCC) in the 1960s. By studying the disagreements and the internal conflicts that undermined the activities of the FPCC in Quebec, the French-speaking province of Canada, the analysis explores more broadly how regional and local dynamics affect the workings of inter-American solidarity. The study argues that the failures of the Canadian Fair Play in Quebec did not reflect a lack of interest in Cuba on the part of progressive forces in the province. Rather, it was misunderstandings and disagreements over the political practice of Cuban solidarity activists that undermined Fair Play's recruitment efforts in Quebec. The article reveals a dissonance between, on the one hand, an Anglophone leadership in the Canadian Fair Play that saw the movement in support of Cuba through the prism of North-South solidarity and, on the other, French-speaking Quebeckers who conceived of their solidarity with Cuba through a South-South lens. These contradictory visions of Canada-Cuba solidarity had a negative impact on the Fair Play venture in Quebec.
