Characterization of the point spread function of the solar orbiter coronagraph Metis

Abstract
Metis is the coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter designed to capture images of the solar corona in visible (VL, 580-640 nm) and ultraviolet (UV, H I Ly-alpha, 121.6 nm) wavelengths. Our study focuses on the comprehensive analysis of the Metis Point Spread Function (PSF) by examining the stars images acquired within its Field of View (FOV). Since the initial mission phases, a meticulous examination of the PSF characteristics has been conducted. The analysis considers Alpha Leonis and Rho Leonis stars, with different spectral properties, acquired with both the UV and visible Metis channels, the latter also including a polarimetric imaging mode. We compared the in-flight PSF data with the expectations from on-ground calibration, identifying any discrepancies, and optimizing our understanding of the Metis optical performance in space. Based on the calibration data, we have developed a ray-tracing model capable of reproducing the PSF characteristics as a function of the star image position on the detector.
