Cet article explore la morphogenèse du gangstérisme dans les townships sud-africains à la lumière de la décomposition des familles. Plus précisément s’intéressera-t-on aux Cape Flats, en périphérie du Cap (Cape Town), capitale législative du pays décrite de manière récurrente comme « la capitale mondiale du meurtre ». Cet article s’appuie sur une série d’observations participantes et propose quatre lois anthropologiques susceptibles d’éclairer le phénomène criminel à l’aune du système familial. Nous soutenons la thèse que la déstructuration des cellules familiales, imputable historiquement à la période de l’apartheid, a continué avec l’ère du néolibéralisme au début des années 1990. Nous explicitons en quoi ces groupes criminels s’apparentent à des substituts parentaux qui présentent, pour user de terminologies bourdieusiennes, des « analogies de fonction » ainsi que « des homologies de structures » avec la cellule familiale.
