One Step Closer to Equitable Healthcare: Students’ Perspectives on the Impact of Rural Pharmacy Practice

Abstract
Being able to advocate for equitable access to healthcare in rural settings starts with real and authentic first-hand experiences. During our co-operative education term this past summer, we moved to a remote town in Northern Alberta, Canada to work in a community pharmacy. The experience that we had in Peace River was eye-opening, powerful, and influenced us to further advocate for a truly inclusive health care system. Our experience will solidified that a career in rural healthcare not only benefits patients in the community, but also allows pharmacists and pharmacy students to grow both personally and professionally. Rural pharmacy practice is stimulating, challenging but also one of the most rewarding opportunities one may experience.
