Abstract
Abstract Italian literary history has been shaped by a profound interplay of linguistic diversity and the aspiration for unity. From Dante’s De vulgari eloquentia to the multilingual achievements of the Commedia, the tension between Latin, regional dialects, and vernacular experiments has defined centuries of literary production. The evolution of Tuscan-Florentine as a literary standard is examined against the backdrop of Italy’s polycentric linguistic landscape, influenced by socioeconomic, political, and religious forces. The chapter explores the role of key literary figures in leveraging multilingualism as a creative tool while resisting linguistic homogenization. From the humanist revival of Latin to modern dialectal poetry and narrative experimentation, this analysis highlights how linguistic diversity has persisted as both a cultural asset and a form of resistance. Ultimately, the text underscores the enduring vibrancy of Italy’s plurilingual traditions amid historical and political pressures.
