Abstract
Despite their common occurrence in non-marine rocks, Cochlichnus is rarely reported produced in-situ. In this study, we document larvae of Orthocladiinae (Diptera: Chironomidae) producing Cochlichnus-like trails along the lakeshore of Barrier Lake, Alberta, Canada. These trails occur in association with traces resembling Gordia and Helminthoidichnites. Additionally, a summary of traces produced by modern chironomids is provided. Although chironomids are widespread and prolific tracemakers, their neoichnological significance is underappreciated in the rock record. We hope this report and short review encourages further palaeo- and neoichnological investigations of these ecologically important insects.
