Dissonant seas: Black critical theory, <i>river run thee</i> , and the counterpoint to critical ocean geography

Abstract
This essay examines the material-theoretical analyses of the ocean subtending both critical ocean geography and Black critical theory. In providing this analysis, we raise concerns attending to the (im)possibility of their joint commensurability. We raise this impasse through attention to Black geographies, Afropessimist theory, critical ocean geography, and Matana Roberts’ album river run thee. Rather than attempting to mediate this impasse, we argue that the demands Black studies place on critical ocean geography throw into crisis its underlying assumptive logics and break open the conceptual architecture of its ocean. We conclude that if critical ocean geography were to take seriously the theoretical contours of Black studies, then it must follow this abyssal descent through to the point of dissolution.
