Heritage unbound? Anticipation, queer politics and performance of memory

Abstract
What might a queer perspective on heritage offer us? In August 2019, the New Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen hosted The Trial of Zeus – a theatrical event in which the authors clashed in the roles of prosecutor and advocate. Performers presented the mythological material of ancient Greek cultural heritage in a staged trial held before a live audience surrounded by antique statues of Zeus, Dionysus, Metis and other deities. The audience, invited to participate as the jury, was encouraged to take ownership of these stories and reflect on future relationships between archetypes of gender, bodies, sexuality and justice. This performative experiment was part of an ongoing series of lecture-performances, workshops and museum interventions by Maksimov, exploring how material heritage permits and enables particular performative politics while simultaneously prohibiting and constraining others. Central to these investigations is the notion of ‘queering’, employed as a gesture of disorientation and estrangement.
