Abstract
In sociology, the idea that stigma is entirely a socio-cultural construct born of unmet normative expectations is virtually axiomatic. This paper seeks to challenge that disciplinary orthodoxy by merging the sociology of stigma with the fundamental principles of evolutionary psychology. In doing so, it argues stigmatization must be seen as a bio-cultural (or bio-social) phenomenon deeply rooted in both our evolved psycho-biology and socio-cultural relations. To demonstrate the viability of this blended approach, a reexamination of stigmatization in relation to the visibly homeless, mentally unwell police officers, and youth bullying is presented.
