Abstract This article discusses the traditional alloys used for highway signage in North America and their suitability for closed-loop recycling to lower their carbon footprint. It offers recommendations for substituting these with alternative alloys. The comparison highlights how the markets and alloy choices in North America differ from those in Europe, where alloys with a high recycled content are used for the same purposes. Alternatives to alloy 5052, including existing 3xxx or 5xxx alloys, can enhance the carbon footprint without affecting performance.
