Edgard Varèse résume, en une formule très contractée dont il a le secret, en quoi et comment le film sonore est une occasion pour la musique de sortir de l’impasse dans laquelle elle se trouve ; cette occasion tient au drame spatiotemporel très singulier que le cinéma impose aux configurations visuelles et sonores, et au rapport entre les deux : « une copénétration de volumes et de plans visuels, et de volumes et de plans sonores » (Varèse 1983, p. 57). Une interprétation basse de cette formule n’y verrait que l’application au cinéma d’une étiquette souvent reprise par Varèse pour présenter sa pratique musicale propre ; une interprétation haute peut y voir une idée esthétique dont, en création et en théorie musicales et cinématographiques, on continue encore aujourd’hui de découvrir la puissance poétique : la musique d’un film doit se dépasser vers une musicalité du cinéma, et cette musicalité du cinéma est affaire de production et d’implication temporelles d’événements d’espace et d’affects de matières.
