Abstract

The impact of no-till (NT) on soil organic C (SOC) is still a matter of debate. In a cold temperate climate like Canada and in other temperate regions, the beneficial impact of NT in improving SOC storage is mostly observed under drier soil moisture regimes. This differential effect seems to be due, at least partly, to the observed positive effect of NT on plant productivity (and consequent C inputs) under drier moisture regimes. However, evidence also suggests that the mineralization of both SOC and crop-derived C is reduced with NT under drier moisture regime. Disentangling the respective influence of each factor still remains difficult. At this stage, it is hypothesized that the crop yield effect is probably dominant but evidence suggests that other factors related to the fate of SOC or plant-derived C cannot be excluded.
