Abstract
L’article s’efforce de saisir la manière dont Hegel pense l’existence au sens le plus général de la notion. L’hypothèse est qu’il renonce à la concevoir comme ce qui est donné dans la perception ou comme ce qui réalise une essence. Il définit trois formes d’existence en une séquence structurelle qu’on retrouve, quoiqu’avec des contenus différents, dans un grand nombre d’étapes du parcours encyclopédique. Cette structure oppose a) l’existence « abstraite », repliée sur soi, b) l’existence « finie », inscrite dans l’altérité, mais en tension avec elle et c) l’existence « pour soi », c’est-à-dire inscrite dans l’altérité, mais la gouvernant. Selon l’hypothèse défendue ici, on peut voir dans l’hégélianisme une philosophie qui, affichant son désintérêt autant pour le pouvoir-être que pour le devoir-être, met au centre de l’investigation les manières diverses — et souvent précaires — dont le « tout » se fait advenir et entre dans l’existence.
