Abstract
Cet article part d’une déclaration de Husserl, selon laquelle il aurait trouvé sa méthode phénoménologique chez les Naturforscher allemands du xix e siècle (Mach, Hering). J’étudie en détail la nature de la phénoménologie "physique" élaborée par Mach, et dégage les possibles points de rapprochement et de divergence avec la phénoménologie husserlienne. Je montre qu’elle remplit un objectif bien précis et ne peut être comprise comme le préalable général aux autres sciences (notamment la psychologie). Elle n’est pas une théorie des éléments, contrairement à ce que certains commentateurs ont affirmé. La psychologie machienne ne peut être descriptive ou phénoménologique, car son objet (la conscience et ses actes) est toujours conçu comme un "morceau" ou une "partie"de la nature. La psychologie machienne est physiologique . Si Husserl a raison d’y voir une forme de naturalisation du mental, je défends néanmoins l’idée qu’il s’agit d’un naturalisme doux ou modéré : un physicalisme non réductionniste , qui fait droit à la spécificité du mental.
