Abstract

Understanding the unique characteristics of aluminium alloys and exploiting these in ways developed by other industries, for example, transportation, architectural applications and consumer goods, will lead to the production of light, durable and whole-life cost-effective aluminium bridges. Adopting the concept of extrusions, placing material where it will be most efficiently used and expanding the use of friction stir welding (FSW) can be described as architecturally liberating, freeing engineers to propose new exciting lightweight bridge structures. Not only do aluminium bridge designers need to consider what are novel and appropriate bridge designs in their own countries, but they should also look at available design possibilities in, say, the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia.
