Au Sénégal, la gestion des aires protégées s’inscrit dans une longue tradition militaire propre aux régimes foucaldiens de la « souveraineté » et de la « discipline ». Toutefois, cette culture coercitive est mise en critique par une approche participative de la conservation de la nature, qui s’est diffusée depuis les années 1990 dans le cadre de l’appareil de coopération Nord-Sud. Depuis 2015, deux programmes de recherche internationaux et transdisciplinaires, Future Sahel et Xpaths, mis en œuvre dans le cadre du projet panafricain de Grande Muraille Verte, encouragent la participation des acteurs locaux dans la gouvernance des ressources naturelles de la région du Ferlo, au travers de méthodologies d’accompagnement à la gestion socio-écologique du territoire. À travers une enquête située au sein de ces arènes participatives et une confrontation avec des cadres d’analyse inspirés du concept de « gouvernementalité », cet article examine comment un groupe de chercheurs proches des « sciences de la durabilité » participent à modifier les rapports de pouvoir en introduisant de nouveaux modes de régulation politique. Les résultats de cette recherche démontrent que ces dispositifs font évoluer les rapports entre gouvernants et gouvernés sur ce territoire périphérique.
