Cet article s’interroge sur la notion d’acceptabilité sociale dans les projets de réaménagement des rues en faveur d’une réallocation des espaces pour les piétons et les cyclistes dans les villes. S’appuyant sur une revue de presse de 139 documents médias et la consultation d’experts, cette recherche étudie l’acceptabilité sociale de quatre cas d’aménagement urbain montréalais visant à favoriser les déplacements actifs sécuritaires et fonctionnels. Les résultats montrent les défis d’acceptabilité associés à l’expérimentation par les pouvoirs publics, la saturation de la population face à une intensification de mesures qui s’implantent dans une période circonscrite, la mobilisation de la société civile et la position occupée par les acteurs économiques de même que les contradictions des opinions sur un même projet. Les conclusions remettent en question la notion de consensus et de seuil dans l’estimation d’un niveau d’acceptabilité sociale influençant les décisions publiques tout en montrant que les interventions d’aménagement qui bouleversent nos modes de vie non durables et les expérimentations novatrices sur l’environnement bâti ont la propriété de susciter de vives oppositions. Ces résultats détiennent un potentiel de transférabilité pour les projets luttant contre les changements climatiques. De même, l’impératif de l’acceptabilité sociale peut constituer un piège pour les actions promouvant la transition socioécologique.
