Cross-border migrations in western Africa: narratives of migration and mobility

Abstract
Migration in West Africa is complex and multidimensional, shaped not only by the long history and culture of migration in the region, the impact of colonialism, and regional political, economic, cultural, and environmental dynamics. The imposed migration governance objectives of external actors and the regional elite have greatly impacted policy, political, and legal approaches to West African migrants within and outside the region. This paper identifies the micronarratives of migration in West Africa as a contribution to efforts to decentre migration narratives. Based on fieldwork carried out between 2019 and 2022 and including site visits, non-participant observation, and qualitative interviews of cross-border migrants in West Africa experiencing the changes in approaches to migration and mobility in the region, this paper explores migrant micronarratives in the region that stem from the everyday experience of regional migration and finds meaning in these experiences.
