Abstract
This thesis will reflect on how cities in the developed world have become disconnected from water; seeing it purely as a functional source and ignoring the essence of what Ivan lllich calls the “water of dreams ”. 1 This disconnect has been compounded in the city of Ottawa, where reports by Frederick Todd and Jacques Greber introduced planning focused on aesthetics and the visual experience of the city. Their recommendations imposed a strong urban arrangement that physically distanced the public from the water. This thesis examines how architecture can be used to reunite Ottawa and it’s water. Urban and architectural projects that embrace water rather than shed it, led to the development of strategies used in a thesis project. Four architectural interventions along the Ottawa River are proposed to break through the existing arrangement and provide the public clear access to the water.
