Abstract
In midst of the mounting persecution of Jews in Germany in the late 1930s, living behind cloister walls, Edith Stein engaged in spiritual practices of reading, praying, and writing as she prepared to make her perpetual monastic vows. Writing her ”žVorbereitungsexerzitien für die ewigen hl. Gelübde (10. IV.–21. IV. 1938)“ (“Preparatory spiritual practices for perpetual monastic vows, April 10-21, 1938”) during Holy Week, Stein reflected on Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection through his mother’s perspective. In her poem “Juxta crucem tecum stare,” (“Under the cross to stand with you”), written on Good Friday 1938, Stein envisions herself at the foot of the cross as witness to the grief of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Drawing on the tradition of Mary as mater dolorosa or Mother of Sorrows, in the historical context of the ramping persecution of and violence against Jews in Germany in the late 1930s, Stein depicts Mary the mother of Jesus as the quintessential image of human suffering.
