Cet article interroge le discours sur la maladie dans le Journal de Marie Uguay, oeuvre fondée tout à la fois sur l’expérience du cancer et sur la tentative de le dépasser dans l’écriture. La maladie apparaît en des termes et par des procédés particuliers dans la mesure où la diariste omet le vocabulaire médical, technique, les comptes rendus de visites et de traitement. Cette omission, relativement surprenante par rapport aux conventions du genre diaristique, révèle une conception du langage qui fait l’économie de l’objectivité scientifique, du regard quantifiant et décisif sur les choses que peut poser la médecine. Dans un rapport instable à la maladie (tantôt tentant de l’expliquer, tantôt évitant toute explication) et au destinataire de cette écriture journalière, Marie Uguay avance dans le langage comme vers son destin, dans une expérience quotidiennement tragique, que seule sa parole ouverte sur la vie et sur le désir peut dire.
