Abstract
Crohn's disease represents a significant socioeconomic burden with a global incidence that has increased over time. Due to the considerable diversity of this condition and the need to distinguish different phenotypic characteristics among affected populations, a standardized classification system was required to improve patient outcomes. Building on the momentum generated by various studies, the Montreal classification was developed and formulated. Although this classification aims to categorize patients with Crohn's disease and align outcomes with personalized management strategies, and despite being the most widely used classification to date, adherence to its application remains relatively limited. This article describes the Montreal classification and explains how its systematic use can assist clinicians in establishing evidence-based Crohn's disease management.
