Abstract
In a key scene from Orson Welles’s The Lady from Shanghai (1948), the putative femme fatale Elsa Bannister (Rita Hayworth) is shown pressing a button, after which a dying man collapses in her nearby kitchen. She presses the button again, as a result of which it would seem a vehicle carrying Michael O’Hara (Orson Welles) and George Grisby (Glenn Anders) crashes.
