Abstract
On 23 January, 2015, Abdullah, the sixth king of Saudi Arabia, succumbed to lung cancer and passed away at the age of 90 in the National Guard Hospital in Riyadh. One of the last surviving sons of the founder of the kingdom and last of his generation to rule the country, the ageing crown prince, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, ascended to the throne at the age of 79. As soon as the death of Abdullah was announced by Saudi officials, Erdoğan cut his African tour for a day in order to attend the funeral of the passing king. This was Erdoğan's first visit to Saudi Arabia since 2012. Turkey even declared a day of mourning over the death of Abdullah. Following these conciliatory gestures, Turkey made more overtures by extending its support to Saudi intervention in Yemen and vocally criticizing Iran's expanding role in the region. Just a month after attending the funeral of Abdullah, Erdoğan was back in the kingdom to test the waters, being one of the first regional leaders to hold extensive talks with the new Saudi leader. The two-sides sought a rapprochement when Erdoğan met Salman in a highly publicized meeting in late February 2015. The visit took place after a period of political standoff between Ankara and Riyadh over Egypt. In bid to recover the relations between the two countries, Erdoğan paid another visit in December 2015, the third one in the same year, which was followed by prime ministerial and foreign ministerial visits. This was followed by the Saudi king's visits to Turkey in November 2015 to attend the G20 (Group of Twenty) meeting and again in April 2016, just three months before the coup attempt in Turkey. Salman visited Turkey upon the invitation of Erdoğan and also attended the 13 th OIC Summit held in İstanbul. During that visit, Turkey bestowed its highest honor, the Order of the State, on Salman as a rare mark of respect. The burgeoning ties between two countries since Salman came to power became evident when Erdoğan awarded him the highest state medal. During the king's visit, the two countries emphasized cooperation on regional matters and signed a MoU to establish a Strategic Coordination Council. Then came Erdoğan's Gulf tour in 2017.
