High spectral resolution spectroscopy with PRIMA

Abstract
The Probe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics (PRIMA) uses fully cryogenic optics to achieve background-limited sensitivity at THz frequencies. A Fourier transform module (FTM) modulates light from a 1.8 m diameter telescope and routes the phase-delayed signal to a long-slit grating spectrometer for dispersion and detection. By limiting the optical power at each detector, the post-dispersive combination enables spectral resolution R=4400 (112 µm/λ) at wavelengths 24 to 235 microns with sensitivity near the limit from astrophysical backgrounds. We describe the PRIMA FTM and the reconstruction of sky spectra from the sampled interferograms.
