Abstract
Zhou Enlai was probably the most important leader in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) after Mao Zedong, his ill-fated successor, Liu Shaoqi, and his ultimate surviving leader, Deng Xiaoping. Together they formed the CCP and the new People’s Republic of China, founded by the party in 1949. Yet assessing Zhou’s life has been clouded not only by the secrecy that characterizes the lives of top Chinese party leaders but also by the enduring tension in Zhou’s life: Was he the “Grey Eminence” and “Duke of Zhou” so warmly remembered by survivors of the tumultuous Cultural Revolution for protecting many cadres and intellectuals, or was Zhou a tragic enabler of Mao Zedong’s tyranny who failed to stand up to the nation’s leader, who had become a vicious bully? Chen Jian’s biography faces this question squarely and gives the historian’s answer: It’s not so simple, Zhou was both. The seven hundred pages of text and a hundred pages of notes and appendixes explain why; it is a highly readable narrative account that walks the reader through the major stages of China’s modern revolutionary history and the growth and changes of the CCP from the 1920s until Zhou’s death in early 1976.
