Depuis l’article pionnier de 1903 « De quelques formes primitives de classification » rédigé par Marcel Mauss et Émile Durkheim, nombreuses sont les recherches qui ont contribué à l’enrichissement de l’ethnoscience et aux orientations théoriques et méthodologiques qu’elle a prises au cours du xxe siècle. Par-delà les inventaires taxinomiques des débuts de l’ethnoscience, les recherches autour de la façon dont l’homme classe ont mené peu à peu à croiser d’autres disciplines comme la psychologie et l’éthologie animale, ou encore les sciences du langage et la biologie.Proposant une réflexion sur les catégories, les taxonomies, l’histoire des institutions, les savoirs et l’écologie politique, ce livre dresse un état de l’art de l’ethnoscience en Europe en regard des travaux pionniers français de Mauss, Barrau, Haudricourt ou Friedberg, mais aussi des travaux issus de la tradition américaine. De la Bretagne à la Polynésie en passant par l’Indonésie ou encore le Canada, ce livre replace les catégories au cœur de l’anthropologie, et montre que les catégories ne sont pas préconstruites ou imposées aux êtres humains au sein d’une société : elles sont avant tout issues de l’expérience que nous avons de la vie et du monde qui nous entoure.
