Abstract
Au Nord-Cameroun, l’administration française a adapté sa politique de maintien de l’ordre colonial en fonction des réalités précoloniale, géographique et anthropologique. Cette adaptation s’est traduite par la création du corps des goumiers chargé de la surveillance coloniale, exclusivement dans cette région du pays. Initialement recrutés parmi les gardes au service des grands chefs musulmans de la région, les goumiers sont au centre des rapports de force et de collaboration entre l’administration et les autorités traditionnelles. L’évolution de leur mission et la professionnalisation de leurs pratiques policières traduisent aussi les tensions qui traversent les rapports entre l’administration et les pouvoirs traditionnels. Intermédiaires entre le pouvoir colonial et la police locale, les goumiers sont aussi des percepteurs fiscaux en plus d’être au coeur de la diplomatie inter-impériale entre la France et l’Angleterre, notamment dans la surveillance des frontières et des confins sahéliens.
