Ideal asymmetric nonimaging concentrator with restricted exit angles

Abstract
We present the asymmetric angle transformer (AAT), a generalization of the two-dimensional compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) which permits both an asymmetric inlet angle range and an asymmetric/restricted exit angle range. The detailed geometrical construction is developed by direct application of the edge-ray principle, and ideality of the design is confirmed via transmission angle and outlet angle curves obtained by Monte Carlo ray-tracing. Existing concentrator designs including the symmetric angle transformer, asymmetric CPC, and basic CPC are shown to be limiting cases of the AAT. The AAT may find utility in applications where control of both the inlet and outlet angle ranges and orientations is advantageous, including stationary solar concentrators, building-integrated photovoltaics and daylighting, illumination, and radiative cooling.
