Cet article vise à réhabiliter la démarche d’une interprétation générale de phénomènes humains vastes, complexes et diversifiés. En effet, la déconstruction postmoderne – étape nécessaire dans les sciences humaines, assurément – s’est combinée avec la méfiance naturelle de la discipline historique à l’égard des généralisations, et a donc fini par produire une progressive parcellisation du savoir. Le but de ce texte est de tenter, avec tous les risques que cela implique, une lecture globale du phénomène monastique, à tout le moins dans la période de ses origines. Le sacré, concept très critiqué dans les sciences religieuses, est néanmoins mobilisé comme clé d’interprétation de cette forme de vie ascétique. À la suite d’un examen sélectif des sources, on lui ajoutera le qualificatif « total », bien connu des sciences sociales.
