Abstract
On a beaucoup traité du concept de religion chez Kant, mais très peu du sacré. Cela tient sans doute de la polysémie du mot « Heiligkeit » en allemand, que l’on traduit soit par sainteté, soit par sacré en français. Mais cela relève peut-être du mot « sacré » lui-même qui semble appartenir à un autre âge, évoquant un quelconque obscurantisme suranné incompatible avec les lumières de la Modernité. Le texte qui suit démontre cependant qu’il tient une place importante dans la doctrine morale kantienne. Nous indiquerons d’abord en quoi il se distingue de la sainteté chez Kant, selon le contexte dans lequel l’un ou l’autre se trouve. Si la sainteté évoque un modèle à suivre ou un archétype moral, le sacré traite de l’expérience humaine de la liberté. On verra ensuite comment il décrit une manière d’être face à la majesté de la loi, le scrupule devant le sublime et le fragile. Ces deux premiers mouvements trouveront leur aboutissement dans le devoir d’introspection, le plus important d’entre tous car condition même de la liberté et qui annonce à la fois une « descente aux enfers » et « l’apothéose » de la transformation morale.
