Abstract
L’image de la femme assise devant son piano découle d’une longue tradition iconographique mise en place à la Renaissance et visant à faire état d’un statut social plutôt qu’à mettre en lumière une pratique professionnelle. À travers l’exemple emblématique de l’huile sur toile intitulée Renata Borgatti, Au Piano, l’auteure analyse la contribution éminemment personnelle de l’artiste Romaine Brooks à un genre pictural très codifié. Le présent article vise à retracer les enjeux idéologiques de ce portrait, par le prisme de la question du genre et de l’iconographie du musicien virtuose, mais aussi de la filiation artistique. Cette étude interroge la dimension sociale de la femme artiste et revient, en filigrane, sur le sens caché que Romaine Brooks donne à ce portrait qui ne relève pas d’une commande mais bien d’une démarche personnelle de la portraitiste.Si la postérité ne pardonna pas à Romaine Brooks de ne pas avoir été du côté de l’avant-garde, un siècle plus tard, force est de reconnaître que cette œuvre fait état d’un changement de paradigme dans la représentation de la musicienne professionnelle, entre tradition et modernité.
