Abstract
This introduction invites readers to understand the early United States as a nation of emigrants. It introduces the history of emigration from the United States and compares it to the more familiar history of immigration to the United States before 1865. Through this comparison the introduction defines emigrant rights to include freedom of movement and expatriation while explaining why certain people possessed emigrant rights and why others did not. The introduction also addresses the relationship between emigration and citizenship by contrasting emigration right citizenship – or the individual freedom to move across borders and choose national allegiance – with birthright citizenship. Individuals exercised emigration right citizenship by leaving the United States for Canada and Mexico.
