Abstract
Abstract Great Britain claimed the authority to impress its subjects into naval service, including those who were naturalized citizens of the United States. This claim was among the causes of the War of 1812 and for many in the United States a threat to emigrant rights. This chapter explores the War of 1812 from the perspective of legal and political debates within the United States over naturalization and the limits of emigrant rights. This chapter also explains the role of American citizens who expatriated themselves to fight against the United States as British subjects living in Canada. The War of 1812 ultimately proved to be a legal and political victory for those in the United States who believed that citizenship included rights to free movement and expatriation.
