Abstract
This chapter discusses some of the direct and indirect tax consequences Mormons have faced as a result of their practice of polygamy. In the popular vision, polygamists were also tax criminals; this view of polygamists as outside the realm of the legal was underscored in a congressional investigation of polygamy. This status as outsiders has often driven polygamists into new locations with different tax regimes and circumstances. But while their polygamy was salient, the economics of Mormon polygamy had more impact on their taxes. Mormons who fled the United States for Mexico and Canada faced different laws and different situations, but in both places, their communitarianism fit uncomfortably with the local and national tax law.
