Abstract
One of Ellington’s critical successes is the Shakespeare suite called <italic>Such Sweet Thunder</italic>, dedicated to the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Canada, and premiered there in 1957. The 12 movements are stunning in their originality and inspiration. Each movement represents a Shakespeare character in a dramatic situation. Four movements are “sonnets,” in which Ellington transposes the strict literary form into musical analogues, unique in any musical genre. The movements were performed as a suite only three times, and in random order each time. Consequently, they are a glittering heap that cries out for internal ordering.
