Abstract
This chapter introduces Wetumpka, Alabama, a town with a turbulent history marked by natural disasters, political losses, and racial violence. It highlights a horrific lynching in 1900, when a mob of White men burned a young Black teenager, Winfield Townsend, at the stake after accusing him of attempting to “outrage” a White woman. The brutality inflicted on Townsend reflected the terror many Black people in the South lived with at the time. The chapter marks the birth of William Benson Bryant in Wetumpka in 1911, born to Alberta in the home of her parents, Lizzie and Charlie Wood. It mentions Bryant's father, Benson, who disappeared shortly after his birth, and how an incident involving Charlie Wood chasing off a white teen with a buggy whip would alter the course of young Bryant's life.
