Abstract
This chapter assesses how the author was fired from her teaching job at Inborden High School. Thirty days after Principal Williams informed her that she did not have a contract for the next school year, her lawyers filed a class action lawsuit in the Eastern District Court of the United States. This early start made it possible for the lawyers to do legal research and file a complaint against the Halifax County School Board and other defendants: <italic>Willa Johnson v. Joseph Branch</italic>. The principal defendant, Joseph Branch, practiced law in Enfield and handled legal matters for the Halifax County School Board of Education. While teachers had generally refrained from joining the local civil rights movement, after the author's firing, a few brave teachers put themselves in jeopardy by signing affidavits. The chapter considers how the Southern Christian Leadership Conference sponsored a citizenship education training in the Franklinton Center at Bricks. It also looks at how the Ku Klux Klan burned crosses in response to the lawsuit; the integration of six Black students to the “white” Enfield School; and how the National Education Association made it possible for the author to continue living in Enfield.
