Abstract
This chapter focuses on several people who worked on the Enfield civil rights movement and made a lasting impression on the author. These include Willa Cofield Johnson, Lillie Cousins Smith, Ira D. Saunders, and William “Bill” Jones. Willa was fired from the North Carolina school system in 1964 because of her active role in the civil rights movement. She had sued the Halifax County Board of Education and the State of North Carolina, and won the suit after three years of depositions, hearings, and appeals to higher courts. The <italic>Brown v. Board of Education</italic> had stopped the further firing of teachers for their involvement in civil rights, such as Lillie Cousins Smith, who had been arrested and jailed for helping the people who were picketing in Enfield. Meanwhile, Ira D. Saunders was the first of six Black students to attend the White Enfield Graded School in 1964. Finally, William “Bill” Jones's entire class was the first full class to be integrated in Enfield.
