Abstract
This chapter explores Enfield today. Whenever the author visits Enfield, there are always reminders of times past and what her hometown was like when she was a child. The most obvious is the fact that there are so many places that have disappeared, especially Black businesses. Interstate 95 rerouted all the traffic that previously ran through the heart of the small town on Highway 301. Due to the lack of jobs in and around Enfield, after graduation many of the author's peers moved north to seek employment in the larger cities. Although attending college and trade or vocational schools opened more opportunities for Black people in the South, it did not matter what type of training one received, the employment options were limited to serving the Black people. As a result, during the 1960s, many young men and women from Enfield moved to Washington, DC, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York. Meanwhile the schools in Halifax County were reorganized from 1981 to 1983. The chapter then looks at the changes on Hannon Street before considering the Black businesses in Enfield that survived the 1960s.
