Abstract
This chapter focuses on the author's family, highlighting how the adults that surrounded her were super role models and protectors. It begins by describing her paternal grandparents, Erastus and Minnie Bobbitt, who purchased land in the New Deal Resettlement Community near Dawson Crossroads prior to 1940. The Franklin D. Roosevelt New Deal program provided low-interest rates so poor farmers and Black sharecroppers could buy their own farms. However, Black farmers were given the opportunity to purchase land in the flood zone of Halifax County, while the White farmers' land was on higher ground. The chapter recounts the author's father's military service in 1943, when he was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in St. Louis, Missouri, in a segregated army. Finally, the chapter looks at the wedding of the author's parents, her birth and birthplace, and the births of her brothers and sisters.
