It details young William Benson Bryant's early life on Benning Road, NE, surrounded by country roads, kerosene lamps, and outhouses. It also highlights the marriage of Bryant's mother Alberta to George S. Washington, a kind porter who read reports of lynchings from the Star aloud at home. The chapter underscores the trauma of the 1919 race riot in DC, sparked by a false accusation and fueled by White rage over Black advancement, which turned violent just blocks from Bill's home.
