La nouvelle loi sur les forêts, « loi sur l’aménagement durable du territoire forestier du Québec » présentée à l’assemblée nationale du Québec en juin 2009, adoptée le 1er avril 2010, propose aux acteurs locaux de leur octroyer la gestion d'une «forêt de proximité». Dans ce cadre, la Direction du Patrimoine, de la Culture et du Territoire de la communauté autochtone Abitibiwinni de Pikogan, souhaite déposer auprès du gouvernement du Québec une demande de reconnaissance de projet pilote de forêt de proximité. Ils ont ciblé un secteur d'environ 1 700 km² au nord d’Amos, pour lequel ils voudraient produire un plan de développement. Ce projet novateur permettrait à la communauté de prendre en main la gestion des ressources de leur territoire. Pour l’élaboration de ce dossier, des enseignants et étudiants de l’université d’Abitibi-Témiscamingue et d’AgroParisTech et AgroSupDijon, ont travaillé durant deux semaines pour aider la communauté à imaginer le plan de développement de sa forêt de proximité. Une proposition de zonage et un plan d’actions ont été proposés. De même, des outils méthodologiques participatifs ont été mis à leur disposition afin de leur permettre d’affiner leur projet tout en impliquant les membres de la communauté.
