Les principales prières associées au culte marial et aux Heures de la Vierge (Ave, Magnificat, Nunc dimittis) entretiennent des liens importants avec la narration dans la mesure où elles sont toutes extraites du récit évangélique. La narration lucanienne préparait l’émergence d’une parole appelée à supplanter la diégèse : en termes quantitatifs, par l’importance qu’elle donne au discours rapporté ; en termes qualitatifs, par les différents types de discours qu’elle introduit (bénédiction, louange, salutation). Les traductions, latines d’abord, puis vernaculaires dès le xiie siècle, renforcent cette attention portée à des discours qui sont entretemps devenus prières. Les éléments qui se trouvaient dans le texte grec (relations verbales de temps et de personne permettant de séparer le discours de l’histoire, lexique qualifiant les différentes modalités des paroles rapportées) ont été consolidés et déployés grâce aux processus de traduction et de commentaires. La brèche ainsi ouverte a été l’occasion de forger de nouveaux récits qui ont pris de plus en plus de distance avec la liturgie officielle, jusqu’à créer de véritables petits romans qui finissent par assumer leur part de fiction.
