Les prières dites « du plus grand péril » sont considérées comme constitutives de la diction épique. Proférées dans des moments de grande intensité narrative, elles peuvent venir souligner l’angoisse de l’agonie, ou celle qui saisit les héros devant un combat inégal, mais elles naissent aussi sur les lèvres des héroïnes en danger. Le fait que les chansons de geste prêtent des oraisons très similaires aux personnages féminins et masculins mérite réflexion. On peut s’étonner aussi du rôle dévolu aux fréquentes invocations à la Vierge Marie dans ces credos qui attestent la foi dans le projet divin de salut pour l’humanité. La question est donc de savoir dans quelle mesure les distinctions de genre sont opérantes pour comprendre ces morceaux d’éloquence dévotionnelle. On constatera que les Credos épiques des héroïnes de chanson de geste répondent, sans altérations particulières, aux conventions de la chanson de geste, mais aussi que les adresses à sainte Marie font entendre des formulations propres à la piété mariale.
