Abstract
Abstract This chapter includes an address that the author was asked to make to the incoming University of Manitoba medical students as part of the Class of 2028 White Coat Ceremony. The author’s introduction to the speech contains a personal vignette, in which he shares how he came to take on a middle name, thus becoming Harvey Max Chochinov. In the speech itself, the author underscores the importance of patients’ perceptions of themselves, the practice of the Platinum Rule, and the transformative journey that the medical students can expect to take over the course of their careers. He reminds them to strive to be more than human body mechanic, but to aspire to be healers; and final, tells them, “patients won’t care what you know, until they know that you care”.
