Abstract
Cette note de recherche remet en question l’idée que le déclin rapide de l’Église catholique au Québec s’explique essentiellement par des facteurs extérieurs à l’institution et notamment par la sécularisation de la société et les autres changements associés à la Révolution tranquille. Si ces éléments ont tous joué un rôle non négligeable dans l’effondrement de l’institution au Québec, l’Église n’a pas été qu’une victime ébranlée par des bouleversements extérieurs. Son recul s’explique également par des facteurs internes et notamment par l’un d’entre eux, longtemps dissimulé : les abus sexuels commis par des prêtres, des religieux et des religieuses principalement sur des mineurs. Ce texte suggère que ces crimes ont affaibli l’institution, contribué à sa perte de crédibilité et, finalement, accéléré sa chute. En somme, les abus sexuels du clergé devraient être considérés dans l’historiographie comme un facteur déterminant dans le déclin de l’Église québécoise.
